How it works

From the label to the source, in three steps.

What the label won't tell you, we ask the manufacturer directly. Content is reviewed by a licensed pharmacist.

01

Search your medication

Enter the name on your bottle. If we hold the answer, you will see it. If not, we write to the manufacturer about the ingredient source. Content is reviewed by a licensed pharmacist.

02

We ask the manufacturer, or already have

For many medications, the manufacturer's written answer is already in our records: animal, plant, or synthetic, and the species when they named it. If yours is not there yet, we write the manufacturer about your specific product. Replies usually take two to six weeks. Leave an email if you want one note when the answer is ready. If your answer comes back animal-derived, or you have no bottle yet, a Wider Search checks every manufacturer we hold in writing for that medicine.

03

Take the answer to the people who know you

What we give you is the manufacturer's stated source, in writing and dated. Bring it to your doctor and pharmacist when you talk about your treatment, and bring any question of permissibility to a scholar you trust. Those decisions belong with them. Ours is only the fact.

A suitable alternative does not always exist. Sometimes it is a different form of the same medicine, such as a tablet instead of a capsule. Sometimes there is none. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
